Certain Matters are considered Complex, often involving many parties, unusually large amounts of documentation, or particular judicial management.
A case is considered complex when it includes one or more of the following:
- Multiple parties, such as large groups of plaintiffs or defendants
- Cross-jurisdictional issues or multi-district litigation
- A large volume of evidence, including electronic discovery (e-discovery)
- Technical or expert testimony across different fields
- Extended timelines and numerous procedural motions
- Significant financial stakes or regulatory implications.
Mass tort and class action lawsuits are such examples.
Complex Matters often require specialized court procedures that differ from standard courts.
Marking a Matter as Complex distinguishes it from Matters that are not Complex and flags it so that your team uses the correct court rules and deadlines. This feature is an important indicator for staff members responsible for calendaring, reminding them to follow the Complex ruleset.
